More than 150 people came to the Bury United Cultural Centre to admire, and in some cases buy, the works of 13 local and regional artists.
The exhibition, which was organized by Shelly Jacklin with the help of Lucille Duhaime, was in its tenth year. "The aim is to promote the region's artists, of whom there are a lot more than you might think. It's important for them to have an outlet to show their work." While the main objective is to showcase regional talent, the event also has a social function. "We serve lunch. People come to eat with us and share their ideas," said Jacklin.
Artists The organizers deliberately chose a wide range of artists. On display were over a hundred works of art in different media including watercolours and oils. A few of the artists also did some business right there since three paintings were sold; others were confident of doing the same after the exhibition. At the end of the day, a draw was held for a painting donated by artist Marilyn Salter of Bury. The lucky winner was Brad Grapes, also from Bury. Happy with the interest shown by the public, Jacklin has no intention of stopping after ten years and intends to continue providing a showcase for artists to present their work.
Not far away, another exhibition called the Bury Art Show was being held at the Community Centre. Organized by the Eaton Valley Community Learning Centre (CLC), the show also featured local artists. The CLC supports locally-driven initiatives that help to create a healthy, dynamic and sustainable community, and works with the community to build a culture of lifelong learning.
