If only the snow weren't so deep, I'd be charging off in all directions these days. May spring be gentle this year.

Bulwer PPP

With funny man Ross Murray front and centre, the Bulwer Purple Prose Project's awards supper is Saturday March 29 at 6 p.m. It's at the Bulwer Community Centre, for the benefit of the same. Get your tickets in advance, if any are still available. Tickets are $20 for students, seniors or persons in 1800s costumes, and $25 for others. Contact Peggy Roy at the Bulwer Community Centre (819-640-3571) or Black Cat Books at 168A Queen St., Lennoxville (819-346-1786). For a foretaste, visit the Entries page at www.bulwerpurpleprose.wordpress.com.

Here's an example of some of the intriguing purple prose posted anonymously on the website: "Old Mister Wilfred Cox leaned in his saddle to miss the maple branch as his trusty steed charged along the muddy, well-rutted Craig's Road headed from Danville to Quebec City to serve on the jury composed to hear the case of the hoodlum charged for cattle rustling in the county of Wolfe when he slipped too far."

Ariane in Newport

A friendly community concert with jazz singer-songwriter Ariane Vaillancourt is planned for Saturday March 29, at 8 p.m. at the Newport Community Hall in Island Brook, 1452 Route 212, Newport. This is an intimate event, in the wood-panelled hall. Her repertoire is in French and English, and will include singing and piano. She has family and fans in Island Brook, but she's gone on to Montreal. She has a group - Le fil d'Ariane - and a website (www.lefildariane.bandcamp.com) and a Facebook page, www.facebook.com/arianevaillancourtmusique.
